While teaching and living in Seoul for 2 years, getting Lasik/Lasek surgery didn't really cross my mind. However, during my second 2 week vacation from work, I found myself with no serious plans and not much to do. Thus, I decided to look into Seoul, Korea's highly regarded laser eye procedure.

It was easy as soon as I went online. I read a couple of thorough blog posts and watched a few videos of 'foreigners getting lasik' (mine and most of their surgeries were LASEK) and was immediately more interested when I learned that the entire process could be completed within my 2 week vacation. One of the blogs recommended EyeMedi, so I decided to shoot them a Facebook message. The response (from Dr. Choo) was very quick and almost left me feeling skeptical. He told me that within a few days, I could come in for a 2 hour consult and then have the operation a few short hours later; SAME DAY! To my happy surprise...

Everything went very smoothly on the day of the operation. Dr. Choo did all of the tests himself. Speaks perfect English. Then, I went out to have lunch while they prepared the operating room etc. Came back and had some blood drawn. The surgery itself was quick (max 15 minutes). The only thing that was a little uncomfortable, that I also remember reading online, was the part when they freeze your eye or something. Even then, I have experienced much worse. Dr. Kim was the surgeon who performed the operation. He was great as well.

I paid and went home. The total cost of the surgery was a mere low $2000s in Canadian dollars. This same surgery (Lasek), in Canada, would have costed at least double AND completed with lesser technology. Korean eye surgery is much more advanced than the rest of the world, as I learned that day. I had to stay in doors and in the dark for about a week. Personally, I did not feel any pain or discomfort like I read or watched from reviews online. But, they give you painkillers just in case. Also had to wear sunglasses for a while and do A LOT of eye drops.

Fast-forward 2 months. My right eye is 1.5 and left is 1.2 which apparently means that my right eye is beyond perfect and my left is very very good. This is true, because when doing an eye-test, my right eye is able to see the smallest set of letters that they have to offer. My left eye, on the other hand, is still a little unstable, but I have been told that it should be okay within the 3 month healing time.
